The Nut Job is an upcoming Canadian 3D computer animated comedy film directed by Peter Lepeniotis. It is written by Lorne Cameron and Peter Lepeniotis, starring Liam Neeson, Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser and Will Arnett. The film is based on the 2005 short animated film Surly Squirrel by Peter Lepeniotis. The Nut Job will be released on January 17, 2014 by Open Road Films

Plot

Set in fictional Oakton, The Nut Job follows the travails of Surly, a mischievous squirrel and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a nut-store heist of outrageous proportions and unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a complicated adventure.

Production

On November 15, 2012, it was announced that Katherine Heigl, Will Arnett and Brendan Fraser would be joining the cast.[4] On March 1, 2013, it was announced that Liam Neeson would be joining the cast.[5] On April 11, 2013, it was announced that Open Road Films had acquired the distribution rights to the film, and that the film would be released on January 17, 2014.

Storyline

After being banished to the city, the mischievous Surly Squirrel plans a nut store heist of outrageous proportions and gets caught up in a convoluted bank heist.

Surly, a curmudgeon, independent squirrel is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. Lucky for him, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of park community, as they gear up for winter - Maury's Nut Store.

3D animated action-comedy "The Nut Job" will be released in theaters on January 17, 2014, Open Road Films announced today. The company said that it had acquired domestic distribution rights to the family film, which sees Katherine join Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Stephen Lang, Sarah Gadon and Jeff Dunham in lending their voices to characters in the family film.

Set in the fictional town of Oakton in the 1950's, the story is based on the adventures of Surly, a mischievous squirrel, and his rat friend Buddy, who plan a nut-store heist of outrageous proportions and unwittingly find themselves embroiled in a complicated adventure. Katherine will voice Andie, the Nut Job's lovely lady squirrel.

The feature is based on director and co-writer Peter Lepeniotis’ award winning 2005 short "Surly Squirrel" and is a collaboration between Canadian animation studio ToonBox Entertainment, Redrover Co. and Gulfstream Pictures. Graham Moloy and WK Jung produced the animation alongside Mike Karz, Bill Bindley, Jay Ahn, Daniel Woo, Hong Kim and Tom Yoon serving as executive producers. Ths screenplay was written by Lorne Cameron.

"This historic collaborative production between Korea and Canada marks the first such CGI movie in history to be released widely in the United States."
